Homegrown Success: In Conversation with Scott Snowden of Flywheel Strategic

Our "Homegrown Success" series champions the entrepreneurial journeys of Members of the Toronto Region Board of Trade, showcasing the behind-the-scenes stories of local business leaders who have significantly contributed to Toronto's vibrant economic landscape.

This week, we sat down for a chat with Scott Snowden, Partner at Flywheel Strategic.

"In a bustling city like Toronto, starting a business is daunting because it’s a big market with a lot going on. But it’s also exciting because of the endless possibilities," says Scott. In the fast-paced digital world, Scott thrives on the challenge of keeping businesses relevant.

Flywheel Strategic integrates design and technology, focusing on client relationships and growth. With a strong team and efficient processes, they deliver quality solutions promptly. We spoke with Scott about his entrepreneurial journey and Flywheel's success.

From Big Corporates to Bold Ventures

Scott's connection to Toronto is deeply personal. "Building a business that had a broad impact and could work for world-class clients was always my dream, and Toronto provided that unique opportunity," he says, reflecting on his connection to the city. Scott attended Queen's University, where he focused on microprocessor architecture, low-level software programming and user experience design. Scott was heavily involved in student government and various societies, gaining leadership and organizational skills that would prove invaluable in his entrepreneurial journey.

At Microsoft, Scott's professional journey began in the world of big enterprise. He and his business partners had accumulated extensive experience at major consulting and tech companies, yet they yearned for something more—something that allowed them to make a direct impact. This desire led to the creation of Flywheel Strategic. Alongside his professional endeavors, Scott is committed to charitable and philanthropic pursuits, personally supporting initiatives such as The Toronto Renewable Energy Cooperative, Tapestry Capital and Relay Education.

"We originally had a different business name," Scott reminisces with a smile. "But we really wanted to have a bigger impact and do things that directly provided results for clients rather than just being a cog in the wheel." This vision set the foundation for what Flywheel Strategic would become—a firm dedicated to elevating digital experiences for B2B clients.

"You have to be willing to evolve and grow with the industry. It's about staying curious, continuously learning and never being afraid to take risks. Starting and growing a business in a dynamic city like Toronto requires a lot of resilience. You need to be adaptable and open to change."

Vision Reimagined: The Evolution of Flywheel

The initial vision for Flywheel Strategic was broad. "We would do anything related to a computer, including painting your walls to match the computer, as long as you would pay our invoices," Scott jokes. However, as the business evolved, its focus sharpened. Today, Flywheel Strategic is laser-focused on creating effective digital experiences that matter.

Scott acknowledges the challenges of starting a business in Toronto's competitive market, but emphasizes the importance of focus and perseverance. "Understanding where to focus and who to talk to is crucial," he explains. "It can be very distracting, but you need to stay in your lane, iterate and refine."

Turning Hurdles into Stepping Stones

Scott and his team overcame these challenges by embracing an open-minded approach. "We found success by not saying no to any conversation," he shares. This willingness to engage with diverse opportunities allowed Flywheel Strategic to grow and adapt quickly. However, Scott emphasizes the importance of knowing when to stay true to your expertise and not overcommit.

A pivotal moment in Flywheel's journey was their rebranding. Initially known by the names of the three founders, the company underwent a professional rebranding that gave it a distinct persona. "It put the company out there with its own offering rather than just the people behind it," Scott says, highlighting the significant impact this had on their growth.

In the fast-paced tech industry, staying ahead of trends is crucial. Scott emphasizes the importance of not getting distracted by every new trend, but also being open to new technologies that can bring efficiencies. "Participating in academic settings, business trade shows and collaborating with other technical platforms is key," he explains. This commitment helps Flywheel ensure they can deliver innovative and effective solutions to their clients.

Community and Collaboration: The Power of Networks

Being part of the Toronto Region Board of Trade has been instrumental in Flywheel Strategic’s success. Scott appreciates the opportunity to contribute and receive support from other entrepreneurs. "Being involved with the Board of Trade has allowed us to share experiences and learn from others," he notes. This network has provided invaluable insights and support throughout their journey.

Partnerships have been crucial to Flywheel Strategic's growth, particularly with Humber College. "Their industry-focused curriculum means graduates come to us with practical, hands-on experience." This allows Flywheel to tap into a pool of skilled web developers, while staying connected with the latest trends. Scott adds, "This ongoing relationship has been key to our ability to grow and innovate."

A Sense of Personal Fulfillment

Scott finds motivation in tackling new business challenges and helping others succeed. "You have to be willing to evolve and grow with the industry," Scott reflects. "It's about staying curious, continuously learning and never being afraid to take risks.”

“Starting and growing a business in a dynamic city like Toronto requires a lot of resilience. You need to be adaptable and open to change. The landscape is always shifting, and you have to be ready to shift with it."

Scott Snowden's journey with Flywheel Strategic demonstrates the impact of focus, community involvement, and continuous innovation in building a successful business. As they look to the future, Scott and his team are committed to continuing their growth, fostering new partnerships and staying at the forefront of digital innovation.
