Last week, the Transportation, Infrastructure, and Land Use Committee held an insightful meeting, with guest speaker Aviva Levy from the Toronto Parking Authority (TPA). During her presentation she highlighted TPA's contribution to the future of urban mobility, from smart parking management to expanded EV charging infrastructure and bike share programs. With new real-time data and dynamic pricing models, TPA aims to address Toronto’s congestion while supporting micro-mobility and transit-friendly developments. The committee acknowledged the impact of parking and city bikes on mobility, and the last mile challenges which affect commuter behaviour. Levy’s presentation highlighted 3 key trends:
- The significant growth of bike share service coverage in the northern bounds of Toronto and plans for greater expansion.
- Enforcement challenges at city parking lots, and technological solutions to overcome them.
- How the future of parking integrates seamlessly with other transit systems, envisioning it as an essential piece of Toronto’s mobility network.
Following her presentation, the committee discussed how to shape Toronto’s waterfront into sustainable, interconnected space, with an emphasis on strategic assets like the Port of Toronto and Billy Bishop. Given the waterfront’s economic impact and potential for further development, the waterfront needs improved transit and multimodal connectivity. Ideas like expanding the streetcar network, new marine transport modes, and enhancing pedestrian pathways were discussed. One of the key themes that emerged was the importance of collaboration among city agencies and stakeholders.
Stay tuned for further Transportation, Infrastructure & Land Use committee updates, and join us at our Race for Space event on December 10th as we discuss a coordinated industrial lands strategy—one that ensures these spaces remain dedicated to economic growth and productivity, while still supporting the region’s housing needs.
