TORONTO, ON – March 25, 2026 - Today, the Toronto Region Board of Trade a released ‘Faster Commutes: Advancing Regional Fare and Service Integration’, a new report calling for the implementation of five actions to fix the GTA’s fragmented transit system and deliver faster, seamless travel across the region.
Currently:
- Riders face long waits and missed connections due to uncoordinated schedules
- Inconsistent fares make trips more expensive and harder to navigate
- Many commuters still rely on cars, worsening congestion
The pain felt by riders is clear. A trip from Markham and Steeles to Union takes one hour using GO and TTC, but costs $7.62. A TTC-only trip costs $3.30, but takes 37 minutes longer, adding over an hour to a daily round trip.
Ontario’s One Fare program proved that fare integration works. Now it’s time to finish the job by integrating transit services across the region, alongside fares.
The report outlines five priority actions:
- Harmonize schedules across all agencies
- Expand seamless cross-boundary service
- Establish a consistent regional service standard
- Deliver unified information and wayfinding
- Fully integrate fares, including GO
Together, these actions will cut travel times, simplify the system, and unlock the full potential of the region’s transit network.
“Fragmented transit is costing GTA riders time and money. Riders shouldn’t have to choose between a faster trip and an affordable one. It’s time to make it work as one seamless network.”
