TORONTO, April 19, 2022 – The Toronto Region Board of Trade applauds the agreement announced today by Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario that will see ONxpress Transportation Partners begin the planning phase of the GO Transit Expansion project.

“GO Expansion is a game-changer for our Region’s transit infrastructure and its highly interconnected economy,” said Jan De Silva, President and CEO of the Toronto Region Board of Trade. “This announcement signifies real progress for this unprecedented investment. The expansion of our GO network is entirely in keeping with what we’ve been calling for through our advocacy in recent years.”

The Board of Trade congratulates our members who are playing key roles on this project. Alstom and Aecon are both leads on the procurement. Alstom is handling advanced global-standard signalling upgrades, along with providing new and upgraded trains and other systems. Aecon and WSP Canada Inc. will be working on construction, design and engineering for the project.

The Board’s March 2021 regional rail report, titled Getting on the Right Track, advocates for GO rail expansion to dramatically increase transit capacity entering Toronto’s downtown core, as well as for trips across the region.

To ensure this project reaches its full potential, we continue to also advocate for fare integration and improvements to connecting local transit services.

In combination with these policies, the GO Transit Expansion project has the potential to deliver much needed relief to the Region’s congested highways and existing transit infrastructure.
