Canada’s economy has reached an economic crossroads with a substantial decline in domestic investment compared to global peers, notably affecting our public markets and all aspects of domestic investment. Pension funds have shifted their focus to global markets and hollowed out our capital markets, leaving many of the country’s great companies starved for capital. Investments made in Canada do not impact just pension portfolios; they also have a considerable impact on the country’s economy: generating jobs, improving incomes, and increasing contributions to retirement plans. Less investment in Canadian businesses increases their cost of capital, discounts their value, reduces their ability to grow, and makes Canada less attractive.

This workshop by LetkoBrosseau aims to dispel the notion that Canada is not a great country to invest. It is one of the most developed economies in the world and has been a wonderful place to invest. Over the last 25 years Canadian equity markets have topped the G7 countries and have consistently delivered very competitive returns. Canada has great companies, true global champions. These competitive businesses deserve our support, and we must create many more. Increasing investments in Canada should be a national priority. To that end, the workshop will discuss solutions and potential of pension funds to reshape the economic landscape.
