A few months ago, our Life Sciences Symposium asked the question, “Can Toronto be the next Boston?” This provocative question led to a packed room and phenomenal day of discussion among industry leaders. Together, we identified two key elements holding Toronto’s life sciences industry back: a lack of anchor companies and challenges in access to capital.
This sector employs 36,000 workers and is perched on the brink of excellence. We are home to top talent, exciting local firms and some of the world’s foremost global juggernauts, but no individual companies operate at the scale seen in cities like Boston or Indianapolis. This means our life sciences sector lacks the critical mass of players operating at the scale needed to catalyze rapid, industry-wide growth.
Adding to this problem is a Canadian challenge that extends beyond the life sciences industry – but which certainly plays a role in it: Canadian startups and SMEs struggle to access capital to fund growth when compared with U.S. competitors.
How can we address these challenges to cultivate giants in our life sciences sector? It’s on our region’s leaders to work together to make the jump from “promising” to “world-class.”
During an engaging breakfast, you’ll hear from three influential C-suite voices from a global life sciences leader, one of Canada’s foremost life sciences accelerators, and one of our region’s most exciting startups.
If you’re a leader in Toronto’s life sciences industry or the industries that support and benefit from it, join us as we convene prominent business leaders and investors who are poised to make Toronto the next Boston.
